Discovering Cava de' Tirreni: among arcades, history and authentic flavors
Just a few kilometers from our hotel, easily reachable by car or bus, the vibrant heart of Cava de’ Tirreni awaits you, a town that preserves the charm of the past combined with the energy of the present. Strolling through its famous arcades, the evocative “porticoed borough,” means immersing yourself in a unique blend of history, art and culture. By day the sun illuminates the centuries-old arches, by evening the lights make the atmosphere enchanting and romantic.
The main street, Corso Umberto I, is the ideal spot for shopping: among artisan workshops that pass down ancient traditions and modern boutiques with high-fashion brands. As you walk, you’ll notice the architecture that tells the dual soul of the town: stately residences alongside house-shops, especially in the Borgo Scacciaventi area, recently redeveloped and now the beating heart of city life.
The history of Cava de’ Tirreni is intertwined with that of the splendid Benedictine Abbey of the Holy Trinity (La Badia), a monumental complex that can be visited just 100 meters from our hotel. From here the current medieval borough developed, leading to the southern gate of the town, marked by the Church of Madonna dell’Olmo and the Sanctuary of San Francesco and Sant’Antonio. Among the most fascinating buildings stands Palazzo Ferrari, an example of historic residential architecture with traces of ancient artisan workshops and inner courtyards that tell stories of families and trades.
Walking under the arcades, you’ll notice that every doorway hides wonders: courtyards with wells, noble coats of arms and gardens with centuries-old trees that preserve the memory of the town. Dominating the central square from above is the Cathedral, which opens the view toward Piazza Abbro, where the Monument to the Fallen by sculptor Francesco Jerace stands in front of the Town Hall, once the old Municipal Theater.
