Arechi Castle: a medieval symbol of Salerno
Among the city’s most iconic landmarks, Arechi Castle overlooks Salerno from a height of about 300 meters above sea level. Commissioned by the Lombard Prince Arechi II as a defensive fortress for the capital of the duchy, the manor remains one of the city’s most significant historical symbols today.
The original structure is built around a central core, protected by towers connected by crenellated walls and drawbridges. Among these, the Bastiglia stands out, contributing to the castle’s imposing and fascinating layout. Surrounding the fortress is a park with nature trails immersed in Mediterranean scrub, perfect for a scenic walk.
The complex houses a medieval museum displaying artifacts such as weapons, ceramics, glassware, and coins found on-site. These objects tell the story of life at the time, including wars, trade, hunting, and the crafts of ancient Salerno. Since 2009, an innovative multimedia museum in the upper part of the manor has offered an immersive experience with computers, videos, and projections that transport visitors back to the Lombard era.
Thanks to recent restorations, Arechi Castle has also become a modern cultural hub: it features a hall for conferences and meetings, as well as a room dedicated to exhibitions and artistic events.
The castle is not just a historical monument, but a living place that unites past and present, culture and nature, offering a unique experience to anyone visiting Salerno.
