The atmosphere within the surrounding village takes guests on a unique, experiential journey.
The hotel is located in one of the oldest hamlets of Cava de’ Tirreni: Corpo di Cava. The fortress, where the city originated, overlooks the Benedictine Abbey complex; founded in 1011, it gave rise to the name by which the ancient village is known, the “Badia”.
Hotel Scapolatiello has always held a special charm for visitors passionate about history, nature, and landscapes. The surrounding village was the ancient seat of the local magistrates and became a village in 1092 by the will of Saint Peter I, when residents of the valley—including local magistrates and Abbey officials—moved there.
On September 5, 1092, Pope Urban II also arrived in Corpo di Cava to consecrate the Benedictine Abbey. In the same year, the village was enclosed by walls with three gates and eight defensive towers to protect citizens from bandit attacks. Over time, the fortifications were demolished and rebuilt by Manfred, King of Naples and Sicily and son of Frederick II, who took refuge there in 1265 during the war between the Swabians and the Angevins.
Today, the village still preserves almost all of its 11th and 13th-century fortification walls.
