THE CHARM OF A STORY THAT BEGINS LONG AGO

From the fascinating routes of the Grand Tour to today, Hotel Scapolatiello preserves the traces of a long and fascinating history of generations that have succeeded one another over the years and have contributed to the growth of a great reality. From the ancient guest book, still jealously preserved in a display case today, one can read the name of the person who had the merit of starting the flourishing business in 1821: Gabriele Scapolatiello. A message dating back to 1846 still refers to him as “the master.”

At the end of the 19th century, his son Giuseppe took over the management, the first member of the family to be registered as a hotelier in the municipal register. Giuseppe was succeeded by his son Cesare, who is especially remembered for his passion and talent in the culinary arts. The secret of his exquisite delicacies lay in the genuineness of the ingredients used in the dishes offered, coming from the organic farms owned by the Scapolatiello family and still used today in the delicious dishes prepared by the chef of the hotel restaurant “Locanda 18.21.”

Perhaps the most difficult administration was that carried out by Cesare’s son, Giuseppe, who took the reins of the business at only 18 years old with his brother Vincenzo and sister Maria after his father’s premature death, giving up his university dreams. Giuseppe had to face the tragic years from the end of the First World War until and beyond the end of the Second. When in 1943 Cava de’ Tirreni became a land of conquest and was bombed, the spirit of openness and solidarity, added to the natural inclination for hospitality, prompted the Scapolatiello family to welcome all the inhabitants who had been left homeless due to the bombings, also providing for their sustenance for a long time.

After 1950, from Giuseppe’s marriage to Zelia Pelosi Ventura, Lucia, Giuliana, and Cesare were born, today at the helm of the hotel.
